Fishermen's Catch

Fishermen's Catch

On our last day in Cabo, Martin, Matt and I got up before dawn and headed down to the harbor to jump on a fishing boat for a few hours. We knew timing was going to be tight as we had to make sure we were back at the hotel to catch the shuttle to the airport but we were determined to have a go and see what happened. After a failed attempt to find somewhere to get a cup of tea, we bought some home made burritos from some lovely local girls and jumped on the boat for our morning adventure.

It's interesting fishing like this as you seem to wait and watch for ages, trailing multiple lures and bait behind the boat, and it's quite relaxing. But then when you see the fin of a fish chasing the boat it's mayhem as it takes a bite and try to get it caught on the hook and then have to reel in all the other lines while wrestling with the fish. Needless to say, we lost the first one. And the second - the one with me on the rod - when the line broke. 3rd time was the charm, though. After seeing to do some impressive jumps and watch Matt wrestle with it for at least 20 minutes we pulled in this beauty of a Marlin. They reckon it was at least 130 pound and was over 8 feet long from the tip of it's nose to the tail.

After getting back to the port and navigating the local commerce system with tips to all the people involved we got a big chunk of the meat (we left the rest of the fish for the fishermen to consume/sell to local restaurants) and headed back to the hotel, where they happily turned some of it into sashimi for me to try before rushing to catch my shuttle bus.

I had a great relaxing and fun time in Cabo this week. Will definitely plan on taking Michelle there for a future vacation. Adios amigos!
